DENNISPORT, MA, and Naples, FL — Suzanne passed away peacefully at her daughter's home in Vermont on Jan. 21, surrounded by her family, after two years with lung cancer. She is survived by her five children (Sally, Keith, Peter, Tim and Cinny), and eight grandchildren.
Born to Hazel and Randolph Betts in 1931 in Watertown, CT, she went to the Northfield School, and earned a BS from Colby Sawyer College. While working at Mass General and living in Boston, she met the love of her life, Staff Burrell, and they married in 1956. They moved to Cape Cod to fulfill their dream of raising a family in a small town.
Susie loved being outdoors and living close to nature. She went for bike rides, walked the beaches, picked beach plums and wild grapes for making jelly, fed the birds, gardened and took outdoor showers until the pipes froze. She was an avid yard-saler and competitive Scrabble player. She was happiest puttering in her gardens, picking flowers and making beautiful arrangements, which brightened every room.
Both Susie and Staff were generous with their time and enjoyed being involved in their community. Together they volunteered with Southside Civic Association in Dennisport and the Brewster First Parish Unitarian Church. For over 20 years Susie volunteered at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History.
Susie and Staff spent many winters "on the road" traveling by RV. They settled into a wonderful community at Lake San Merino RV Park in Naples where they enjoyed bike riding, outdoor band concerts and participating in community activities.
We are grateful for the support of Addison County (Vt.) Home Health & Hospice, Hope Hospice on Cape Cod and AVOW Hospice in Naples, FL. Donations in Susie's memory can be made to hospice, the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, or First Parish Brewster. Online remembrances can be made at www.Gregorycremation.com
A memorial and celebration of life will be planned at a later date.
