It is with great sadness that we announce the death, after an extended illness, of H. Gardiner Barnum of South Burlington. Born in 1934, he was the son of the late Horace and Mildred Barnum of Connecticut, and the grandson of the late Rev. Samuel and Mrs. Pauline Barnum of Vermont.
Gardiner was a graduate of The Taft School in Connecticut; Middlebury College (BS); and the University of Chicago (MS and PhD). He taught for a short time in the Groton, CT, school system; served as an officer in the US Army; and taught for 37 years at the University of Vermont. He was a Geographer, with a special research interest in Onomastics.
Gardiner is survived by Erika Barnum, his wife of 55 years; his children and their spouses: Susan Barnum and Dane Nolan; Sarah Barnum and Peter Kerouac; and Samuel and Erin Barnum; and his grandchildren: Jon, Tess, and Katie Nolan; Luc Kerouac; and Izaak and Silas Barnum.
Also surviving are two of Gardiner’s siblings and their spouses: Charlotte and Duncan Olding; and Charles and Florence Barnum and their family. The son of Gardiner’s late sister Cynthia Allyn also survives, as do many members of Erika’s family.
A private gathering in honor of Gardiner’s life will take place at a later date. Those wishing to remember him may do so with a donation to a charity of their choice. Online condolences may be made by going to www.gregorycremation.com.
