VERGENNES -- Janet (Washburn) Paige, 77, of Vergennes, formerly of St. Johnsbury, passed away peacefully Jan. 23, 2015, in Redstone Villa Nursing Home in St. Albans with her children by her side, following a 10 year struggle with Alzheimer's.
Janet was born Aug. 19, 1937, in Randolph, the only child of John Washburn and Cornelia Bass. Janet's mother, Cornelia, died of Tuberculosis when Janet was age six; she was then raised by her father and stepmother, Ila Dana Washburn. Janet married Ronald Paige, of practically everywhere in Vermont, May 1959, and they settled in St. Johnsbury.
After graduating from Burlington Business College (later to be known as Champlain College) in 1956, Janet held many important office and office manager positions, including the Law Office of Governor Phil Hoff, Fairbanks Scales, and the Law Office of John Swainbank; eventually reaching Paralegal status. She was well known for serving 20 years as the Registrar of the Probate Court for Caledonia County, as well as serving many years, in nearly every possible position for a layperson, at North Congregational Church in St. Johnsbury.
In 2008, when Janet was no longer able to live alone in her home, she moved to Vergennes and lived with her daughter, Patti, who cared for her up until her recent hospitalization just before the first of the year.
Janet was predeceased by her mother; father; stepmother; husband; two aunts; and three uncles. Janet is survived by her daughter, Patti Paige of 5 Sunset Dr., Vergennes; son, Michael Paige and wife, Shellie, of 41 Mountain View Blvd., South Burlington; two granddaughters, Chelsea Paige of Iron Mountain, Mich., and Jenna Paige of Essex Junction; aunt, Linda Bradshaw of Williston; many cousins; and sisters-in-law, Leota Sumner of Burlington, Beverly Lewis of Stem, N.C., and Madine Bitcon of Woodland Park, Colo.
The family wishes to extend their deep gratitude for the care and compassion that Janet received from the staff at Project Independence, the adult daycare facility operated by Elderly Services in Middlebury.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015, at 1 p.m., at Vergennes Congregational Church. Online condolences may be made through www.gregorycremation.com.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate that donations be made in Janet's honor to Elderly Services, Inc. in Middlebury, www.elderlyservices.org; or the Alzheimer's Association, www.alz.org.
