It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of our Mother /Memere Rita Alice (Poirier) Marcotte, 86 of Shelburne,VT on December 20th. She was born June 2, 1930 in Winooski, VT, the fifth daughter of Elias J and Yvonne (Poudrier) Poirier. On August 25, 1951 she married Norman J Marcotte, who survives her. Norman and Rita built their first home in Shelburne, one of the first houses in town across from the Shelburne Museum. In 1959 they moved into their current home in Shelburne village. Rita was a hard worker and loved her job at the University of Vermont Waterman dining hall but "retired" when she got married. Together, as a team, she and Norman established a home appliance and farm equipment business. Rita was pivotal in the success of their business by managing the office, helping unload trucks and dealing with customers and their children while Norman was out on the road.
Also surviving are their four children and spouses/partners : Norma Blow of St Albans, Roger and Dorrene Marcotte of Williston, Gary Marcotte and Annette Labombard, Julie and Jon Kent and former daughter in law Diane Marcotte all of Shelburne. Rita was Blessed with 11 grandchildren, William (Liz) Schultheiss, Anthony (Sara) Blow, Erin, Jim, Kathy Marcotte, Rebeckah (John) Scrivo, Tim (Liz), Jeremy, and Taylor Marcotte, Eliza and Ian Kent and 10 great grandchildren who adore and cherish her. Her surviving siblings and in-laws include Irene (Francois) Bourgeois, Gert Plant, Lucille (Norman) Quenneville, Normand (Coco) Poirier, Jeannine Pepin, Charlotte Marcotte, Claire (Lonnie) Bushway, Rachel (Vernon) Hutchins, and Paul (Melody) Marcotte.
Rita always provided a warm and welcoming home that family and friends across the globe cherished for visits, holidays and family reunions. She was exceptionally devoted, a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend. She will forever be loved and never forgotten.
Our family extends our deepest thanks and appreciation to the VNA Hospice team and to Rita's personal assistants Darlene, Donna, Jim, Jo Marie, Laura, Melissa, Patricia, and Regina who gave her wonderful care and companionship. And to our special angels Tammy Hinchey and Wendy Ordway, you have both worn so many different hats to help Rita and Norman over the years, we sincerely thank you. These people made it possible for our family to fulfill Rita's wish to stay in her home as her degenerative brain disease progressed.
We will celebrate Rita's life with a mass on Tuesday December 27, 2016 at St Catherine Sienna Parish in Shelburne at 11:00 am with Monsignor Michael DeForge officiating. Stephen C. Gregory and Son Cremation Service of South Burlington is in charge of the funeral arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations be made to VNA Hospice, Attention Development Office, 1110 Prim Rd, Colchester, VT 05446.
