John E. Metro, 93, of The Terraces, Shelburne, Vermont, died April 20, 2016 at the Vermont Respite House, Williston, Vermont. John is survived by his wife of 66 years, Kathleen Metro. John and Kathleen were residents of Litchfield, Connecticut from 1965 to 2000, and Palm Desert, California until 2011. In 2011, they moved to The Terraces, Shelburne, VT. John was born, March 1, 1923 in Torrington, Connecticut to John M. and Lena Metro. John was educated at the Torrington schools and then moved with his parents to Bronx, NY, where he graduated Power Memorial Academy. John received his BS from New York University, and his MA from Southern Connecticut State College. John served as a teacher at the Torrington High School for 36 years. John also served as swimming pro at the Litchfield Country Club. After graduating Power Memorial, John served in the U.S. Army during World War II. John enjoyed jazz, theatre and taking his family to concerts and shows in New York City, Tanglewood, Boston, and California. An avid golfer, John also enjoyed tennis, and visiting friends, family, and great grandchildren. John is also survived by a daughter, Patrice Carr, Scituate, MA, her children, Katelin and Edward; Gary Metro, Walla Walla, WA, his wife Nancy, and their son Henry; Ed Metro, Acton, MA, his wife Karen, and their daughters Julia and Suzanne; Will Metro, Williston, VT, his wife Sally Stockwell MD, and their sons, Patrick and Hazen. A Funeral Service for John will be at St. Catherine's of Siena, Shelburne, Vermont, Friday, April 29, 2016 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in John's name to Vermont Respite House, 99 Allen Brook Lane, Williston, VT 05495.
