Lisa Lewis

Lisa Lewis, of South Burlington, Vermont, passed into eternal life on April 6, 2019. A woman of great courage, intelligence, sensitivity and creativity, she dedicated much of her life to caring for her husband and children. Lisa demonstrated her indomitable courage in many ways, including cross-country camping trips at an advanced stage of pregnancy and perseverance in coping with the challenges of aging. She demonstrated her intelligence in her wide-ranging reading, which embraced history, feminism, mythology, the New York Times, and the New Yorker, as well as in her early fascination with the Rubik’s Cube. Lisa showed her sensitivity in thoughtful awareness of the people around her and concern for their feelings.  She expressed her creativity in sewing projects, including hand-crocheted curtains for the kitchen. Daily family dinners also showed Lisa’s skill; every day she generously prepared creative, economical family meals.

Lisa loved reading, taking walks, babbling brooks, crossword puzzles, bowling, and, in later years, Bingo. Jeopardy, Big Bang Theory and the History Channel were favorite TV shows. Lisa was an enthusiastic, knowledgeable sports fan, and in later years especially enjoyed watching tennis and golf. Her family and friends often enjoyed her sense of humor, whimsy, and playfulness.

Elizabeth Lucretia Hurley (Lisa) was born on July 23, 1928 in Albany, New York. She graduated from Spring Valley High School and married the love of her life, Gordon F. Lewis, in 1947. She supported him in his doctoral studies at the University of Kentucky by waitressing, and throughout her life was an astute, empathetic observer of wait staff. In mid-life, Lisa earned two Associate Degrees at City College of San Francisco.
