On Saturday, June 22, 2019, Paula Flanagan of Bakersfield passed away at the age of 68 with her sons and daughter-in-law by her side at McLure Miller Respite House.
Paula was born on September 8, 1950 in St Albans, Vermont to Terrance and Lillian (Parah) Flanagan. Paula graduated from Central Catholic High School In 1968, moved to Florida in 1972, and married Pete Cota on 1974. Paula’s son, Nicholas, was born in Florida in 1979. Paula returned to Vermont in 1983 after Pete’s death and resided in Bakersfield for the remainder of her life. Paula worked at Immigration and Naturalization Services for approximately 15 years, until her retirement in 2012.
Paula was known for her kindness, sincerity, and generosity. She was loved for her gentleness, her sense of humor, and her patience- as well as for her stubbornness and fierce independence. Paula was a talented quilter and stamper. She enjoyed making quilts for her friends, nieces and nephews, and their babies and she sent out handmade Christmas cards each year. Paula was a good friend, a devoted mom and grandmother, and a loving sister. She adored her grandchildren, who were a source of great pride and immense joy for her. Paula will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Paula is preceded in death by her parents, Terrance and Lillian, her sister Kathy Fonda, and her husband Pete. She is survived by her son, Nicholas Cota, and daughter-in-law, Shab Cota; her son, Brian Cota, and his wife, Robbie; her beloved grandchildren, Charley, Max, and Levi Cota; her brother, Terrance James Flanagan and his wife (and Paula’s dear friend) Sharon, her sister Mikaela (Michaelene) Flanagan, her sister Sharon Flanagan and Norman Smith; her nieces/nephews and their spouses/significant others: Blaine and Leah Fonda, Matthew Flanagan and Weslie Burns, Samuel Flanagan and Moriah Manahan, Zachary Flanagan and Shai Taylor, Peter Flanagan and Hillary Sylvester, Mikaela Flanagan and Mark Bruley, Wahkuna Lisik and Tony Maillet, Bjorn and Melissa Lisik, Chantal Lisik and Roberto Roberti, Zeb and Phuc Lisik, Joshua Lisik and Carolyn Roberts; as well as several grand-nieces/nephews and many cherished friends.
There will be no calling hours. A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Angels Catholic Church at 11:00 am on Friday, June 28th with a Remembrance Reception to follow in the adjacent parish at noon. All are welcome to attend either/both.
