LILLIAN B. GALE, age 96, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2019 at UVM Hospital in Burlington, Vermont.
Born July 28, 1923 to Lawrence Boissy and Della (Downs) Boissy in Mooers, New York, she was an only child. She loved remembering her childhood on her grandparents’ farm and was always happiest when near her family. A graduate of Plattsburgh High School, she later took her associate in business degree and worked as a business manager in the retail industry, remaining at Montgomery Wards through age 75 when she retired due to the store’s closure.
Lillian married young and travelled through the United States with her first husband who was in the Air Force. However, her heart was in the North Country. She returned to the Plattsburgh area with her daughter Susan and met and later married her second husband, Reginald Gale. They were surprised by a late life addition of their daughter Lisa. They were married for over 50 years. They both worked in retail, but they had a dream of starting a horse farm and purchased a small property to breed horses on the side. They both loved horses and it quickly became clear they would never actually sell any, so after reaching 7 in total, the farm was designated a hobby. Luckily, the whole family would spend the rest of their lives happily immersed in the horses.
Lillian’s laughter and energy was immeasurable, although her statute small. A petite five feet, no one could keep up with her at work, in the kitchen and on the dance floor. She loved to dance and was a regular with Reg for many weekends at Jackie’s Club. She also had a lovely voice. Music always made her smile and her 96th birthday was spent out listening to the Vermont Jazz Ensemble less than a month ago. She made all the holidays so special and no one did Christmas like she did. Boxes would go out across the country to all near and far. She was incredibly generous and always wanted everyone to feel special and remembered. In addition to the many people she adopted throughout her life, she always surrounded herself with animals.
Last year, Lillian and Reg moved to St. Albans VT to be closer to their daughter Lisa and her family. They made new friends including Deb, the office manager of their building who adopted them and their dog Lucy and became a very close friend and source of support. They were able to spend a lovely summer there this year with the aid of mom’s beloved cousin Alice Gilberg. Also, the annual trip of mom’s other favorite cousin, Harold Downs made her birthday a very special occasion.
Lillian is survived by her husband, Reginald Gale. She is also survived by two daughters. Susan Gleason and her husband Duane Gleason of Key Largo, FL, and their adult children John Champagne, Brian Champagne and Duane Gleason Jr. and great grandchildren Tyler, Kaitlyn, Blake, Olivia, and Logan. Lisa Gale Peery and her husband Phil Peery, and their daughter Gwen Peery of Georgia, VT. Also survived by Reg’s adult children Reg Gale, Pat Bridges, Betsy Wager and Jeff Leidi and many additional children and grandchildren.
There will be a graveside service at Riverside Cemetery in Mooers, New York on September 3, 2019 at 3:00 pm and all are invited to attend to celebrate her life and say goodbye. The family is also planning an annual birthday tribute for her on July 28, 2020.
